Tim Driscoll

Tim Driscoll draws upon a vast and varied study of movement to inform his teachings. He first studied Pilates with Bruce King who had studied directly with Joseph Pilates and whom befriended Tim in a ballet class. Bruce introduced Tim to his first inklings of a mind body connection in telling Tim that he could “send softening messages" to his shoulders.

The intriguingly named Backbone and Wingspan Universal Principles of Movement Studio has a Pilates-based approach in its light-drenched loft space for private one-on-one lessons. Tim Driscoll explains that the sessions are designed to create what he calls 'subtle space' in the muscles of the back, and to increase the space between the ribs and the pelvis. Driscoll's approach makes a person visibly taller and less hunched-over after a session.

The ballet class in which he met Bruce was taught by Nenette Charisse who at eighty years old gave a fluid class using vital imagery which she could portray in her own body regardless of the fact that she taught in pumps and a smartly scarfed dress which hit below the knee. One of the many brilliances she oft repeated was, “You take energy from the floor, process it in your pelvis and send it out through every pore.”

“Working with Tim is about growth, change, and feeling better. It’s also about having fun! You find that you have two new relationships: one with your body and one with Tim.

He is a brilliant supportive teacher who uses his talents to help others attain personal, physical, and spiritual integrity and freedom.”

~ Sue Rothwell

Tim employs universal principles of movement that he learned primarily from fourteen years of study with Martha Yoshida who devised her own unique technique using resistance bands which are wrapped and tied directly on the body. Martha’s adage is “the strength is in the stretch.” Tim also incorporates Bioenergetic grounding techniques he experienced in a seven year study of CoreEnergetic therapy.
His work also involves the exploration and the utilization of skeletal weight which is largely influenced by his study with vocal coach Catherine Fitzmaurice from whom he learned to “let gravity have you.”

“I have worked for many years with Tim. He has a rare gift to integrate and incorporate different movement disciplines, absorbing those elements that are most in accord with the body’s truth.     The result is much more than exercise. It is a movement education that reaches our most fundamental support system. Connecting with and strengtheningthis
deep support then allows for a freedom of movement and profound expression of ourselves in the world.

Tim’s current study is with Elizabeth Andes-Bell of Namastè Yoga Center from whom he is learning how to expand his sphere of influence through the esoteric wisdom of Hermetic Philosophy. He is fascinated with the concepts of creating stable form to engender flow and receive insight and how using geometric shape allows energy to resolve itself through spin and spiral.

As an artist, Tim has been recognized for his solo performances by Time Out New York as one of 97 People to Watch in ’97. Tim received a fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in non-fiction literature in 1999. His autobiographical writing has been published in a number of anthologies, his article entitled, "Self-Imaging: Every Body Has a Story to Tell," has been published in HealthyLivingNYC magazine, and he is currently at work writing an illustrated primer on the principles he teaches.
